Students Making the News!

There may be a rival to the established names on the newsagent’s shelf soon as students at Northallerton School and Sixth Form College have launched their own newspaper.
A small but enthusiastic team of students in years 10-12 gathered for the initial planning meeting in January and shared ideas for the project. The plan eventually came to fruition as the first edition was distributed just before Easter.
The team were delighted to be joined by a special guest at their launch meeting. Hannah Chapman, editor of The Darlington and Stockton Times, joined the students to pass on knowledge and inside tips gained from her time as a journalist. Hannah, an alumnus of NSSFC, fielded a wide range of questions from the inquisitive students and certainly helped them understand what they’ve got themselves into!
Assistant Headteacher, Nick Watkins (pictured with Issue 1), is helping guide and organise the team in their initial stages; he said, ‘it’s been too long since there has been a real, student-led school newspaper in Northallerton. I really hope that this will be a small step in establishing a tradition that runs down through the years for a long time to come.’
Year 10 student, Dan Hurworth, was one of those to attend the initial meeting. He said that he was excited to ‘tell students about what’s happening in the school’. Year 11 newspaper colleague, Maddy Reeves, wanted to be part of the team as she’s ‘really interested in being a journalist.’
The first edition contained articles about sport, drama, charity events and more. With extra people joining the team, the hope is that the next issue will grow to be even bigger and better!
