Sixth Form Biology Trip to the LIFE Centre

16 March 2023  |  fnscreative

On Wednesday 8 March, Mr Stephenson and Miss Hunter ran a Sixth Form Biology trip to the LIFE Centre in Newcastle for their lab session “PTC: A Question of Taste”.  Students were taught industry-standard genetics techniques and used them to extract, multiply and separate DNA to find out whether their genetic makeup matched their ability to taste PTC (the bitter taste in brassicas such as brussels sprouts).  Students used their knowledge of DNA, inheritance and gene expression – as well as the lab skills developed through their practical lessons in school – to complete the tasks set.

A fantastic day of interesting and enlightening biology to aid our students in their continued development and understanding of this fast moving and cutting-edge facet of science.
