Artistic Talents on Show For All to See

11 July 2023  |  Greg Ient

The depth of talent at Northallerton School and Sixth Form College was, literally, there for everyone to see at the recent exhibition of visual art. Students from years 11 and 13 presented the culmination of two years’ work as their coursework and exam pieces were displayed for staff, students and the wider public.

The exhibition encompassed a huge variety of artistic styles in a range of media from paint, acrylics and prints to sculptures and textiles. Some pieces were aesthetically pleasing whilst others tried to challenge the viewer or offer a political viewpoint.

Art teacher, Hayley Stuart, in reference to her students, said that she was, ‘so proud of their work’ and added that it was, ‘beautiful to see it all on display’. Head of the expressive arts faculty, Neil Stimson, explained that it was, ‘an opportunity to showcase the work in a formal exhibition format.’

Visitors to the exhibition were impressed by the skill and creativity of the students. Year 11 student, Helen Wood, exclaimed that it was ‘amazing’ whilst her brothers, Adam and Josh, selected sculptures featuring the sea and trees as their respective favourite pieces.

Lydia Ahmed’s ‘big piece’ featured prominently in the exhibition. A striking portrait with touches of the gothic and a surrealist element, she said that she was ‘over the moon’ to see it on display.
