International Day of the Mother Language

03 March 2023  |  fnscreative

Monday 20th to Friday 24th February, 11 students from different years delivered the assemblies to celebrate the International Day of the Mother Language.

The 6th Form Council picked up the suggestion to celebrate International Day of the Mother Language as the number of students who don’t speak  English as their first language, in our school, is increasing. We thought that this was a great opportunity to demonstrate how open and inclusive the school community is and how students can be actively engaged in the community.

Our EAL students were invited to participate and once there was an adequate number of students, meetings were held to organise the event. Students collaborated to the best of their ability in order to research and present facts about their language and its culture.  All students demonstrated great resilience and courage and managed to support each other where it was needed to overcome difficulties and barriers.

Yasmen, Fatima, Ahlam, Ryon, Ami, Nathaniel, Anastasia, Katia, Krystian, Jakub, Zainab with the guidance of Mrs Mela (HLTA) went above and beyond and worked very hard to deliver the assemblies. The feedback given from the students, the tutors and the Heads of Year was very encouraging and very positive. It was an honour that the Chair of Governors  Mr Bayston accepted the invitation to come and enjoy the assembly. As Miss Cox said “ This is a start to offer all our students a chance to be actively engaged with the assemblies and go on stage and address the audience, These are skills that all students should master”. Mrs Rahn attended the assemblies and congratulated the students and awarded them with a certificate of recognition for being the best they could be!
