A new and exciting Short Story Club has had a successful start, despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic and remote learning. World Book Day is being celebrated on Thursday 4th March.  WBD is a charity founded by publishers and booksellers in the UK and Ireland.  Every year £1 book vouchers are given out to students and can be exchanged for especially written books.  Details of how to use the digital voucher are in the parents' newsletter. A paper voucher will be given out when students return to school.  Although book shops won't be open, most supermarkets stock the £1 books.

Last half term, Mrs Richards focused on the Non-Fiction GCSE Exam Paper with her Year 9 and Year 10 classes and set them some similar challenges. One of the extended writing tasks was to create a ‘Rough Guide to…’.

On 11th December, The English Department crowned Alex B (Year 9) as the winner of the Winter Creative Writing Competition, which was advertised on Instagram @nssfc_english. Alex was awarded some stationery prizes and a £10 book voucher. Alex created an impressive description using some ambitious vocabulary and told the tale of a pickpocket in Victorian London. It was clear that Alex was inspired by A Christmas Carol that Year 9 are currently studying in class.

As part of an exploration of the witches in Shakespeare's 'Macbeth', students were given an optional extra task to try and create their own spell using rhyming couplets, regular rhythm and a Shakespearean language style - I am sure you will agree this is an incredibly difficult challenge!

The English department recently dedicated a whole week of learning to reading. As part of this, we set a competition to review any book and opened it up to all students. As usual, the quality of responses was superb and Miss O’Donnell had a difficult time picking the winners.
