In lockdown Dakota takes Gold

Over a three-day period, Year 10 student Dakota competed in the National Karate Associations 'Virtual Championships', representing her club JS Karate Academy. She competed in the Disability category in which competitors send in a 'Kata' performance to be judged by four referees. A Kata is a solo demonstration of a fight sometimes lasting over 50 moves long. After 3 tough rounds Dakota finished in 1st place in every round, taking home the Gold Medal. Dakota's Karate Coach Sensei James Scanlon organised the competition which was open to all members of the National Karate Association with clubs in Ripon, Bedale, Masham, Thirsk, Northallerton and Grimsby.

We encourage all students to watch this important video which Barney Green, vascular surgeon at James Cook Hospital, has kindly put together especially for schools. He has a student-friendly approach and it takes less than three minutes to listen to his advice about the importance of social distancing and how we can all help by maintaining an ‘invisa-bubble’.

Samuel, a year 11 student, has recently been appointed the first Fire Services Cadet for North Yorkshire 2020/2021. In a virtual ceremony that took place over video link, Samuel was presented with a certificate by the High Sheriff of Northallerton, David A Kerfoot.

These shields will be used throughout the house system, creating an instantly recognisable brand for each house, along with a reminder of the values that we promote in our school community.

Green-fingered Oli Hampson, a Year 9 student, has been doing his bit for the environment and for his local village. Oli, who lives in Danby Wiske, helped to plant two young horse chestnut trees on the village green on Good Friday. These trees were originally planted in pots and grown from conkers, so it was time for them to be planted out to establish themselves as features of the village green.
